Combining custom and derived stores

Custom Stores

Svelte comes with three types of stores predefined: writable, readable and derived. But sometimes we want to have more functionality than just those three. Think of adding extra properties to a store, or some functions like a reset. Luckily anything can be a store in Svelte, the only requirement is that the object has to have a correctly implemented subscribe function. As in this example from the official Svelte Tutorial:

	const { subscribe, set, update } = writable(0)

		increment: () => update(n => n + 1),
		decrement: () => update(n => n - 1),
		reset: () => set(0)

The above script will export a simple readonly count store that exposes functions to increment, decrement and reset the counter. These functions can then be called directly on the store object:

Derived Stores

A derived store is a readonly store that gets it’s value based on another store. The most basic example would be:

const single = writable('1')
const double = derived(store, $store => $store * 2)

In this example, double will always be double the value of single but only single can be modified.

Custom Stores + Derived Stores

When making a custom store it is important to remember that the returned set (or update) function does not have to refer to the same internal store as the subscribe function, this code is a perfectly valid custom store

		set: store.set,
		subscribe: store2.subscribe

While this store only takes a single string as input, the output has three props giving you the original value, a value in only lowercase and one in uppercase. This is of course a very simple example, but can be easily expanded to do integrate more complex functionality.
